Stargate Trivia

Greetings Stargate Fans!

We would like to take this time to let you know that FSF sponsors a Star Gate trivia contest every Thursday night at 8:00 EST PM in Ten Forward  AOL/AIM chatroom with FSF Falk and FSF Duke.

How it works: A Category will be posted such as SGA (Stargate Atlantis ) or SGU (Stargate Universe) followed by the question. The first three people to answer correctly receive five, three and a single point respectively (and copying answers is permitted.)  Bonus questions unrelated to Stargate may be asked at anytime. Bonus questions will be on a range of topics, but normally are Sci-fi related. Points for bonus questions range from 5-10 depending on difficulty.

At the end of the game, the player with the most points wins!  Everyone who tries to answer a question is credited for participation and will receive MyPoints, but the top three players by points will receive additional my points based on their order of finish.

We invite you to come join us and test your knowledge about this great science fiction series.

Word on the Street: FSF Duke

By FSF BK

FSFBK: Greetings! Welcome to “Word on the Street” where we talk to FSF hosts and members and give our readers a unique perspective into their experiences.  My guest this month is FSF Duke, who is the host of Stargate Trivia and serves as GM1 of Stargate Command & GM2 of Starbase 35. Welcome Duke!

FSFDuke: Thank You

FSFBK: Tell our readers a little about your first simming experience. When and where did you start simming?

FSFDuke: I first started out simming many years ago on AOL in the academy and on the bridge which was SFOL i believe. Not officially, more of a guest thing. While in California I met ( online ) a young lady named Karen who was Captain of a sim in the GQS group. I was put at HELM, and eventually became XO of the Akira before we entered the FSF. There were two different ships, Karen’s was the Anerion.

FSFBK: So, your first experience in FSF was when you joined as part of the Akira?

FSFDuke: No. I joined the FSF as a sec officer on the USS-Intrada. Then, Mobeus Chronox, head of the GQS decided to move his sims to FSF.

FSFBK: Do you remember what year that was, when you joined the Intrada?

FSFDuke: Gotta be around 2000.

FSFBK: Wow, you’be been around FSF a while then.

FSFDuke: 10 years.

FSFBK: So, how did you decide to become a host here?

FSFDuke: Well when GQS moved to FSF i had to interview with Shuni and i was accepted  as an FSF host. There was no HHB then fortunately for me.

FSFBK: What would you say is your favorite thing about the FSF?

FSFDuke: Knowing that there are many, many people who feel the same way about Science fiction as I do, common interests and common goals. And of course hosting sims, which I really love.

FSFBK: Now I understand that you are from the Chicago area is that correct?

FSFDuke: South side born and raised.

FSFBK: To your knowledge what if any SciFi connection does Chicago have?

FSFDuke: Well once a year there’s a sci-fi convention. Star Trek, I believe, but I have never been to it personally, only heard about it.

FSFBK: OK, just one final question, something I am sure our readers are eager to hear If you were stranded on a barren planet with Shuni, what would you do?

FSFDuke: I’d have to eat him, you did say it was barren.

FSFBK: You’re not the only one to say that ::chuckles::

FSFDuke: Well it makes sense, first thing is survival that means food. And since he’s the only food around i have shuni steaks.

FSFBK: Well I want to thank you Duke for taking the time to talk with me.

FSFDuke: Anytime .

Check out “Word on the Street” every month for more interviews with fascinating FSF members!

Crash Landing on Almas - A Fanfiction by FSF Bailey

Chapter 2

Bragi slowly opened his eyes, smelling smoke. As his eyes opened, he looked over and saw Vardis kneeling over a sitting Wagner, wrapping his right forearm in a makeshift brace.

“What happened?” Bragi lightly questioned, fighting to sit up in the chaos.
“Commander! I almost thought we lost you there for a minute.” Wagner said gleefully, finding a moment of hope in the desperate time.

“Commander. It’s terrible. We lost 7 passengers, and the pilot. We also have 11 wounded, including Sam and yourself, with 2 being severe. All systems seem to be out and no power. And the radio and transponder are beyond repair with what we have here.” Vardis calmly reported, using her hand to push some of her now messed up hair from her face. Hearing the conversation, Blake had made his way forward and was now entering what remained of the cockpit.

“Commander!” Blake said, saluting. “Has she informed you of the situation?”

“She has indeed Lieutenant. What have you been doing?”

“We’ve been tending to the wounded sir! After I did what I could, I went searching the wreckage to see what I could salvage.” Blake reported.

“What did you find?” Bragi inquired.

“Well, I found some of the general medical supplies sir. I also managed to find three blaster pistols, 9 breath masks, but nothing that can help us repair the radio.” Blake reported.

“What do you need?” Bragi question, his eyes gazing at Vardis.

“For one sir, a power source.” Vardis reported with her technical expertise. “For some reason, all of the power cells are either drained or damaged. And blasters cannot provide enough power to get the radio range we need. I also need a decent transmitter. We have nothing left to broadcast with.”

“Any colonies nearby?” Bragi questioned.

“No sir, but several people said they saw some sort of structure as we were heading downward. North, north west of our present location.” Blake answered.

“And the atmosphere?” Bragi questioned.

“From what the people have heard, it is survivable, but breath masks are recommended.” Vardis answered intently.

“Well, looks like we need to send out an expedition. Try to find our luggage.” Bragi answered back. At that, Blake turned around to begin rummaging through more of the debris. Bragi sat up and leaned his back on console, trying to ignore the young pilot’s blood on the cockpit glass.

“What about the deceased sir?” Wagner inquired.

“Move them outside the ship for now. Our efforts should be focus on keeping the rest alive for now. If rescue does not come soon, we will do what we can for them.” Bragi answered. As Bragi finished, he heard loud footsteps marching toward the cockpit.

“What are you doing, having Blake not let anyone leave the ship and search the debris?!” Vrees yelled as he entered the cockpit. “What gives you the jurisdiction here? You’re not in charge here!”

“Vrees calm down!” Bragi yelled, as he noticed the lovely blonde from before following Vrees, her blue eyes scanning the cockpit.

“You’re Commander Bragi, aren’t you?” The blonde questioned. “I remember you from Vrees’s court-martial proceeding.”

“Yes I am. Well, what’s left of me anyway.” Bragi answered back.

“Well, if my camera wasn’t destroyed in the crash, I would probably be asking you for an interview. Hi, I am Analia Dumas, reporter from the Holonet.” The blonde stated.

“That explains why a woman would actually be talking to Vrees.” Bragi chuckled.

“Hey! I ought to….” Vrees angrily said, before Analia put her hand over his mouth.

“Well Vrees, if you want to go out and search for your luggage, fine. But we are trying to maintain some order here. Chaos will not help any.” Bragi added in.

“Whatever.” Vrees said, still angry from the comment. Then he stomped away to look for his possessions.

“Well, I may be asking you all for statements later.” Analia said, before heading out of the cockpit after Vrees.

“Well, some things never do change, do they?” Vardis said.

“Unfortunately. We kick him out of the army and he still finds a way to bring chaos to already bad situations.” Bragi answered back. “Well, we should get together a search team to go try to trek to that compound. Go look for volunteers.” Bragi said to Wagner and Vardis. Then they all got up and headed back into what remained of the passenger compartment.

Word on the Street: FSF Myles

By FSF BK

FSF BK: Greetings! Welcome to “Word on the Street” where we talk to FSF hosts and members and give our readers a unique perspective into their experiences. My guest this month is FSF Myles, who is the GM1 of two sims, the USS Phoenix & Starbase Adelphi, and also the GM2 of the USS Endevour. Welcome Myles!

FSF Myles: Nice to be here BK, thanks for having me.

FSF BK: Tell us a little about your first simming experience. When and where did you start simming?

FSF MylesI started simming here in the FSF in 2003. I heard about simming, and not knowing a lot about it, thought I’d start in a established group. My first sim, if I remember correctly was the USS Titan, later named the Dark Frontier.

FSF BK: So your first simming experience was with the FSF, well that takes care of my second question, so, how did you decide to become a host here?

FSF Myles: While I was with the Titan/Dark Frontier, FSF Tommy suggested I try out for hosting, and I thought I’d give it a try. To be honest, I was terrified, not knowing if I had the ‘stuff’ to be a host.

FSF BK: What would you say is your favorite thing about the FSF?

FSF Myles: That’s a hard one (chuckles) I would say the openness about allowing players and hosts to be creative, and also the comfortable feeling I have with my fellow hosts and players. Especially in terms of there not being a lot of ‘politics’ and formality that I’ve seen in other groups.
FSF BK: Many of our readers don’t know that you are from Nova Scotia. To your knowelege what if any SciFi connection does Nova Scotia have?

FSF Myles: ((Laughs)) I’m not sure. I think I heard a rumour that Levar Burton has a home somewhere here, but it could be a rumor.

FSF BK: Now, I understand your story since you came to FSF in 03’ is very unique, can you tell our readers a little about that?

FSF Myles: Yeah sure. I guess its unique in that I came in not knowing a thing about simming, and only being a very casual viewer of Star Trek and a fan of the novels. I came into the group hoping to maybe try my hand at simming, and see if I enjoyed it. 6 months to a year later I’m hosting. And over the years I’ve had the pleasure of hosting some great sims, including relaunching the USS Magistrate, taking over Starbase Adelphi, and relaunching the USS Phoenix. As I said, I think my experience has been unique too because I’m, in my opinion at least, not your classic Star Trek fan. I’m openly gay, and tend to lean towards having my characters be as well, which is unusual in classic Trek simming as far as I know.

FSF BK: OK, just one final question, something I am sure our readers are eager to hear If you were stranded on a barren planet with Shuni, what would you do?

FSF Myles: ((Laughs out loud)) Lord, hard question. I’m not able to claim the fifth am I?

FSF BK: OK…how about if you were stranded with Truce?

FSF Myles: I think with both of them, it would be a rather interesting experience. I would probably first, scream like a teenage girl about being stranded on some weird planet, then I think we’d get along ok.

FSF BK: I’m sure our readers will love that! Well I want to thank you Myles for taking the time to talk with me.

FSF Myles: It was fun. Thanks for having me.

FSF BK: Check out “Word on the Street” every month for more interviews with fascinating FSF members!

Fleet Updates: April 2010

  • Delta Fleet had another successful month at they walked away with three of the monthly awards. Players within Delta celebrate the USS Stargazer’s tenth anniversary, as well as a relaunch of the Stargazers secondary game ‘After Dark’, focused on the antics of the USS Stargazer after the normal duty shift finishes! The USS Independence crew worked hard at posting this month and celebrated not only helping Delta Fleet to win the third Fleet Activity Award of the month but also to take the Community Award; adding to the list of Delta Fleet honours building this year! The USS Firewall continues to strengthen with every month, players continually building on the restart championed by FSF Lance and FSF Borealis!
  • Epsilon Fleet is working a lot over the past couple of weeks on the fleet’s community participation as well as more activity throughout the entire Epsilon, and is looking forward to a couple community events that will be announced soon, in addition to that the recent host changes in a couple of Epsilon’s sims over the past couple of months concluded at the start of April when FSF Tommy joined FSF Katana at hosting of the USS Atlantis
    • Space Fleet saw a reniassance of FSF’s only Star Wars-universe game, the Paragon. Paragon saw big changes as a ‘new’ GM came aboard and the game switched back to AIM/AOL. Space Fleet also recently added the vampire PBeM, Nocturne’s Reign, and gained a new host in FSF Gunn, who will be joining Stargate: Libertas. Beyond those games, Space Fleet maintains two exciting chat games and one PBmB Star Trek-universe game that are always looking for new players — Star Trek: Aquarius and USS Exeter, alongside Star Trek: Project Origin. As well, FSF’s only Firefly-universe game is also housed in Space Fleet and is currently looking for new players.

    What’s new with SGU?

    by FSF Duke

With the end of Stargate SG 1 and Stargate Atlantis, MGM left SG fans hanging without a means to quench their thirst for more — until now.

Enter the newest SG series Stargate Universe (SGU).  While the other two SG series were mainly staged on a base, SGU is staged on a previously unmanned Ancient warship that has been traveling through the stars for hundreds of thousands of years.

As many of SG fans know, a Stargate has nine chevrons of which either seven or eight were used to create the wormhole connection; seven chevrons meant the destination was in the Milky Way, while locking eight Chevrons allowed travel to somewhere in another galaxy.  For years members of Stargate Command wondered how to engage the 9th Chevron and where it would go,  in the SGU we found the answer.  The main problem was power; as the number of chevrons increased, the amount of power also had to increase exponentially. Finally a planet was discovered that created enough geo-thermal energy to power the gate.

A team of engineers, and a group of military personnel, were sent to the planet to attempt to figure out how to engage the final chevron. That team, lead by a new character, Dr. Rush, was able to dial the 9th one and open a wormhole, however they were fully expecting to be on another planet but found themselves on the Ancient warship more than a billion light years from Earth.  Unlike the previous series which was mostly manned by military personnel, this series has a mix of military and civilian personnel, who each have their own agendas: Colonel Young, the current commander of the expedition, wants nothing more than to get everyone back home; Dr. Rush’s concerns are about finding how to control the ship (Destiny) and continue exploring.  These differences have created a great series with mini plots and alliances that will surely get your Stargate juices flowing.

FSF offers a variety of Stargate games on a wide variety of platforms. Check out http://stargategames.com/ for more information.

USS Stargazer hosts 10 Year Anniversary Celebration!

    By FSF Arianna

On March 22nd, 2010 the USS Stargazer of Delta Fleet celebrated it’s 10 year anniversary. A special simulation, complimented by a reunion from several of the original Stargazer crew marked this special milestone. Additionally, the USS Stargazer crew lobbied hard to win the Sim of the Month once again for their anniversary month.

The anniversary event was a great success with over 15 active players in attendance. A few of the most noteable attendees were original Stargazers Duke, Starla, and Fike. Duke was the Stargazer’s first Executive Officer. Fike was the Stargazer’s Chief Medical Officer and later the first Chief Engineering Officer. Starla was the ship’s first helm girl, later becoming Executive Officer herself.

A little bit of history about the Stargazer: she started out as an independent sim, brainchild of the man we all know as FSF Truce, though the moniker the Stargazer would not have come about had it not been for the input of the original 3 Stargazers mentioned above. The sim started out using the bravenet chat platform. Later moving to AIM remaining still independent, before joining into the FSF shortly after. Despite various changes in schedule she is still one of the most successful simulations within the FSF to date having expanded beyond a single chat simulation to one of advanced proportions engaging in cross-sim plotlines and even taking on an additional integral message board portion that is available to those players who are not able to attend the live simulations or for players who attend the live simulation to continue their activity in between live simulations.

The USS Stargazer is a chat based simulation currently operating via the AIM platform. The simulation occurs Monday evenings at 10pm EST. The simulation is hosted by FSF Truce. For questions, he can be reached at FSF Truce via AIM or at FSFTruce@aol.com.

Word on the Street: Jay Truce

    By FSF BK

Welcome to the segment of the newsletter called “Word on the street,” where we ask hosts and members about some of their simming experiences and interesting things about them that people may not know.

For the inaugural interview we are pleased to have Jay Truce, FSF’s Executive Officer.

BK: I’m going to be asking you five questions to give our readers some insight into who you are as a simmer and a person. I’d like to begin by asking you about your first simming experience. What was the first sim you played on and when did you start simming?

Truce: You’re really making me dig deep into the recesses of my memory, and age myself at the same time. My first experience with simming was around 1991. I was on a little Gateway Notebook 386, using an AOL 1.0 Floppy disc and I think a Zoom modem. Might have been one of the newer models, you know the ones that ran at a blazing 7200 BPS. I’d heard that there was this whole big online community for Star Trek enthusiasts (re: Geeks), so when I signed onto AOL one day I went to the Keyword window and typed Star Trek. A box opened up and it was an ad for Starfleet Online (later SpaceFleet Online). I am not sure but I think there was a link to the Starfleet Academy chat room. followed it and met a few people, went back a few times and then saw my first Academy Sim. After observing a couple times, I tried one. I’ve been hooked ever since.

    BK: Good memory recall there.

Truce: Not really, I borrowed cue cards from Cassie.

BK: When did you get involved in FSF and how did you get involved?

Truce: I’d heard of FSF during the 90s, while I was an active member of Spacefleet Online. What I had heard was never good, as there were tensions between the groups and every so often there would be “raiding parties”. A group of stupid kids would come into our chat rooms and disrupt our games. So I was not a fan of FSF. In 2000 I was on a sim in the group AQS (Alpha Quadrant Simulations). That sim was the AQS Fire. That is where I met Duke, Perez, Zeven and Wolf. The core of people who created the Stargazer and later the Akira. The Akira was a new sim in the AQS when we were informed that the group was merging into FSF. I was against the move and offered my resignation. Perez and Duke worked me over for a few days and convinced me to just come along for the sake of the sim. I told them fine, but under no circumstances would I ever be more than a player on the USS Akira. I wouldn’t join any other FSF games, and I sure as hell would never become an FSF Host. At that time I was Hosting the Stargazer and also was a Host in SpaceFleet Online, the AOL sponsored group.

BK: So when FSF group formed back in 93’ you were aware of it only as a group of disruptive simmers, very interesting.

Truce: Actually, I was not aware of it at all, until the late 90s.

BK: Now here is a question you might not get a lot. What would be one piece of advice you’d have to share with new simmers who might be reading this?

Truce: Join the USS Stargazer! Or do you mean besides that?

BK: Yeah…not sure this section of the newsletter is intended for shameless plugs.

Truce: I would advise any new player to just come in with no expectations. Don’t think about rank, position or Hosting. Just concentrate on having fun and learning how to play well within the group of players on your game. Have fun, and be a good team player. The rest will take care of itself. Oh…and listen to your Hosts!

BK: If you had to choose one aspect about the FSF that you really liked, what would it be?

Truce: The USS Stargazer! The people. Over the last ten years in FSF I have (virtually) met literally hundreds of people. I have made many great friends over the years, some of whom I have had the pleasure of meeting. I really can’t emphasize enough how many great people we have here in FSF, and that is why we are the premiere group in existence.

BK: Final question for you, something that I am sure our readers would be dying to know more than anything. If you were stranded on a desert island with Shuni what would you do?

Truce: Hope that he went well with a nice Chianti?

    BK: Terrific answer!

Truce: But before I ate him, we would talk about…THE USS Stargazer!

Check out this column every month for interviews with more of our exciting hosts and members!

The USS Stargazer! www.ussstargazer.com Sims every Monday night at 10pm EST on AIM.

FSF BK is the GM1 of the USS Independence and SB35. He is also FXO of Alpha Fleet.

Crash Landing on Almas - A Fanfiction by FSF Bailey

    Chapter 1:

Joran Bragi and Codiaque Blake VIII sat seated next to each other on the crowded transport. Across from them, Vardis Kree and Samuel Wagner sat, sitting next to each other.
“This trip to Dorumaa is just what we need to take our minds off of the war.” Vardis said across to Blake and Bragi, who seemed to be falling asleep while in transit.
“I agree. Thankfully the Paragon is receiving repairs and the rest of the fleet is becoming fully stocked with supplies and equipment.” Bragi replied, looking up from his daydream.
“I still can’t believe Vrees’s court-martial was fake and he went undercover.” Blake said, still thinking of the recent conflict.
“I just wish it was permanent.” Vardis replied.
“So do I.” Bragi answered back. As Bragi finished, Blake grabbed his sleeve to get his attention. Once Bragi turned, he began pointing to the other end of the transport.
“Isn’t that Vrees?” Blake questioned. At that, the other three turned and saw their recently returned colleague, sitting on the opposite end of the transport, being questioned by some blonde woman. “He has some nerve.”
“Now, now.” Wagner added, “He could have just had the same idea as us.”
“Don’t be so naive Wagner.” Bragi responded, anger in his voice… “He’s here to get some sort of retribution on us for trying to have him court-martialed in the first place, by ruining our vacation.” As Bragi finished, the ship shook lightly as it came out of light speed and the sublight speeds activated.
“At least we’re almost there so we won’t have to see him after this.” Blake added in. As they looked down out of the window at the planet below. “This is Almas. Dorumaa is a moon of the planet which was terraformed into a resort planet.”
“Why Blake, you are so wise. I didn’t know you had it in you.” Vardis replied back, giggling as she finished.
“Well, I was educated quite thoroughly,” Blake replied back, “Plus I always wanted to go here.”
“Well, would you look at that?” Bragi said, pointing at the horizon on the surface. “There’s actually light coming up from the planet.” Bragi said questioning.
“Oh yeah!” Wagner said, noticing the light.
“I wonder what’s causing that.” Vardis said questioning. Before they knew what was happening, some sort of lightning jumped from the planet to the transport, engulfing it in sparks. “What’s happening!?” Vardis yelled.
“I don’t know!” Bragi yelled back. Before they knew it, the transport was smoking and began rapidly descending toward the surface. Bragi could’ve sword he heard yelling coming from the cockpit. Upon hearing that, he jumped from his seat and ran to the cockpit, with the others quickly following. Entering, he saw a single lone pilot, who seemed young and inexperienced. “What happened?” Bragi inquired
“I don’t know. We were just cruising along, in orbit of Almas and heading to the resort. Suddenly, some sort of electricity came out of no where and engulfed the ship! Now the engines aren’t working and half the systems have failed.” The young pilot inquired?
“Don’t know what to do?” Bragi yelled
“Not really. I haven’t been trained for this.” The pilot yelled back.
“Then get up. Wagner! Get in the main seat. I will get in the copilot seat.” Bragi commanded. At that, the young pilot hopped from the seat and ran to the back of the cockpit, taking a seat in the rear. Wagner quickly hopped in the seat with Bragi assuming the copilot seat.
“Shouldn’t you be piloting sir, with me assisting?” Wagner inquired.
“No, you’re the one that’s still certified. Remember? Don’t worry, Sam, you just got plenty of experience and I am here to help.” Bragi reassured.
“What should we do?” Vardis inquired.
“Get to your seats and order everyone to buckle up. We’re going to have a rough landing.” Bragi answered back. At that, Blake grabbed Vardis and pulled her back to there seat as Wagner fought to maintain the controls.
“Everyone buckle yourselves in!” Vardis yelled herself and Blake following her advice as she yelled it.
“She’s not responding!” Wagner yelled, worried.
“I am working on extending the flaps. Hold on!” Bragi yelled, fighting with the buttons on the console…
“I have slowed the descent a bit! Can you level her off?” Wagner questioned
“On it.” Bragi yelled back, looking up at the rapidly approaching plains. “Brace yourself!” Bragi yelled, buckling himself in. The young pilot sat behind them watching, struggling to buckle his seat belt and unable to do so due to his trembling hands. Wagner snapped his buckle closed, and fought more to get the nose up before they hit. Seconds later, the front of the ship smashed into the surface of the plains, causing momentum to throw everything not attached forwards. The young pilot was flung from his seat, forward, hitting the cockpit glass between Wagner and Bragi, smashing his head and cracking the glass in the process. Less than a second later, the rear hit the surface with a loud thud. The transport began gliding across the plains at a rapid speed, turning sideways as it slid. Then the transport came across a boulder, protruding from the surface of the plains. The transport hit it while still at a high velocity, the boulder causing the transport to stop abruptly. As it hit, the hull of the transport ripped and tore on the boulder, causing it to collapse into itself. As Vardis looked backwards, she saw several seats thrown up by the collapsing wall, smashing the passengers strapped in there, and sending others soaring across the cabin. In the shaking, Sam’s right arm smashed into the console next to him. He grasped his right forearm in pain. Bragi felt his seat break free from its bracings as it broke free and sent him tumbling sideways to the deck, his head hitting as he fell. Almost as abruptly as it had started, the crash ended.
